The Bulldog also known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog, is a medium-sized dog breed. It is a muscular hefty dog with a wrinkled face and a distinctive pushed-in nose.

Bulldogs have characteristically wide heads and shoulders along with a pronounced mandibular prognathism. There are generally thick folds of skin on the brow; round, black, wide-set eyes; a short muzzle with characteristic folds called a rope or nose roll above the nose; hanging skin under the neck; drooping lips and pointed teeth, and an underbite with an upturned jaw. The coat is short, flat, and sleek with colours of red, fawn, white, brindle, and piebald.

In the United Kingdom, the breed standards are 55 lb (25 kg) for a male and 50 lb (23 kg) for a female.[11] In the United States, a typical mature male weighs 50 lb (23 kg), while mature females weigh about 40 lb (18 kg). The Bulldog Club of America recommends the average weight of a bulldog to be 40–50 lb (18–23 kg).

Bulldogs are one of the few breeds whose tail is naturally short and either straight, screwed or thin and thus is not cut or docked as with some other breeds.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Bulldog's disposition should be "equable and kind, resolute, and courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacifist and dignified. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior.

Breeders have worked to reduce/remove aggression from these dogs.Most have a friendly, patient, but stubborn nature. Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children.

Generally, Bulldogs are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and other pets.

Another interesting Bulldog fact is that when they do catch a good scent, they’ll sometimes vocalize in a specific way known as baying, which originally helped direct hunters to the location of prey.

Bulldog are, for the most part, versatile dogs. They’re happy wherever you are (wherever they’ll get plenty of love), and don’t mind spending time indoors. Of course, you’ll need to get out on a daily walk and work in play opportunities that your dog will enjoy.

If you have a family, you’ll find that a well-trained Bulldog is very patient with children. But be wary of leaving your Bulldog unattended with access to local pets in your neighborhood. Because Bull were originally trained as catch dogs, they sometimes feel remnants of their hunting instinct, which can be directed at your neighbor’s cat or other unsuspecting animals. A strong fence without escape routes is a good idea.

On account of their short coat, it’s important to take steps to keep your dog warm in cold weather and limit unsupervised time spent outside in the cold. And although Boxers do well in hot weather, white ones might need some sunscreen. Yes, dog sunscreen is a thing.

The ideal pet parent for a bull has time to interact, exercise, and entertain their dog. A bored boxer will chew, lick, and dig to excess, so a kennel or crate may be necessary when you need to be away for longer than they like.

Bull owners may also need to field questions from people who might be intimidated by their dog’s formidable presence and willing to provide extra structure and supervision when the situation calls for it.

Like Pitbulls, Bulldogs has a short, tight coat—meaning you don’t need to take them in to get a frequent haircut. You can groom a Bulldog at home by giving them a bath, trimming their nails, cleaning their ears and brushing them regularly. If you don’t want to do this yourself, a groomer will do all of this for you. Plus, they’ll also typically express your dog’s anal glands, which many dogs need several times per year.

Establish a twice-weekly brushing routine. Using a natural-bristle brush, work along with their coat in circular motions. This will loosen dead hair and encourage their skin to produce healthy natural oils. Like any breed, the benefits of hiring a professional groomer a few times per year are that they’ll trim nails, express their anal glands and clean ears.

Some individuals of this breed are prone to interdigital cysts—cysts that form between the toes. These cause the dog some discomfort, but are treatable either by vet or an experienced owner. They may also suffer from respiratory problems. Bulldogs have a plethora of health problems including cardiac and respiratory disease, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, and other concerns. They are extremely susceptible to heat problems, can easily drown in swimming pools or other water, and require daily cleaning of their skin folds to avoid problems.
