Toy Poodle's Facts & Information

There's no doubt about it...whether or not you love Poodles, you really cannot miss them at any time. Poodles are known for their curly locks and their bright personalities, but they are more than a purely aesthetic attraction, or simply the brains to back them up by. We want to help you decide if a Poodle dog is right for you by walking you through this popular dog breed and providing you with as much information as possible.

Poodles are typically friendly, energetic, bright dogs with a great sense of humor. Despite their initial reticence towards strangers, they quickly warm up to you if you speak to them for a while. Due to their non-existent territoriality, they aren't the best watchdogs/guard dogs for your home since they aren't particularly territorial. Despite this, they will protect themselves, their families, and their owners if they see a clear danger. The majority of the time, however, they're mellow, calm, and alert, acting as a playful and intuitive companion to people and families that they love.

As a pet, a poodle is a very adaptable breed, which makes them suitable for an apartment as well as a large house with a yard. If you make sure that they have plenty of opportunities to play and exercise outdoors, as well as your love, they will be fine. A dog park is a great place for them to play catch, and they're going to enjoy that as well. Also, they love hiking, especially if the hike ends with a dip in a lake.

As a family pet, Poodles also make a great pet for those of you who live in a shared home. Poodles tend to be quite gentle and reliable with children when properly socialized. It is important to make sure that your dog has a quiet retreat when the situation becomes too chaotic so that he doesn't become overstimulated.

Ideally, the owner of a Poodle should be active, willing to spend time with the dog and enjoy playing with them. Making sure that the dog has ample opportunity to be physically and mentally active is very important.

In common with many dogs, these are dogs that do not like to be left alone and in particular, they want to be petted and hugged. To properly care for a curly-haired dog, their human companion should be around often and be just as affectionate as the dog.

Ideally, a Poodle parent would be able to spend most of their time caring for their pet while working part-time or from home, making this scenario feasible. It can be a lifesaver to ask a trusted pet sitter or daycare company to help you with your pet on those days when you cannot fit in a walk every day.

If you're not showing your dog (or taking him for a walk), just clip his tail off (or give him a puppy clip). You shouldn't have to comb too much because of a short clip, as long as you don't show your dog to strangers.

Adult dogs that are going to show will need a professional haircut, as well as extensive grooming to avoid matting. Show clips may require grooming to be spent in the range of ten hours per week, by the pet owner or groomer. Similarly, some more elaborate hairstyles, such as those on corded Poodles, require both a lot of patience and expertise.

Unless you own a show ring Poodle, you probably won't be displaying the dog in the ring anytime soon. If you prefer to cut your dog's hair yourself, you can do so using electric clippers, which can also be a DIY project, and you only need to brush him when he starts to look a little tangled.

It is important to note, however, that the Poodle suffers from health conditions just like any other dog breed. An example is Addison’s disease, which is an insufficiency of the adrenal gland, which can be treated with medications. Bloating, gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), thyroid issues, epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis, hip dysplasia, and, less commonly, von Willebrand's disease are some other health problems. It is not uncommon for pet parents to opt for pet insurance as an extra precaution.

They tend to get ear infections thanks to their long ears, so you should consider examining your veterinarian about proper cleaning methods and tools.
