Yorkshire Terrier's Facts & Information

A Yorkshire Terrier is a popular toy dog because of its long, silky coat and sassy personality. It is one of the top ten breeds among Americans, and it's constantly one of the most popular breeds. Despite what many people might imagine, Yorkies are not fancy city dogs, but they are originally from textile mills and mines where they hunted rats. There isn't much you can't do with Yorkshire Terriers, except digging deep and exploring new territory.

Keeping in line with the Yorkie's Terrier roots as vermin hunters, this little pet requires stimulation from its daily walks to remain happy. During its time spent playing, he is a very happy animal. You might think they're cute-and believe us, they are-but do you know about their tiny stature and butteriness that hardens like ice? There's a chance that your Yorkshire Terrier may try to take charge of your daily tasks. It is important to keep in mind that dogs like Yorkies crave attention from you most, so they might act up to get it, and that socialization and training might help. While there will be some yapping, you will eventually raise an affectionate and sweet-natured dog if you train him consistently.

The Yorkie originated in textile mills and mines as ratters. The Yorkie of today is renowned for its well-behaved habits in apartments and its good manners in the home, which is why it is very sought after. The Yorkie breed is considered to be the best choice for apartments due to the small size of this breed, along with the hypoallergenic coat. Nonetheless, Yorkies can also act as quiet watchdogs, which means that if they hear loud noises, they could react. If you want your Yorkie to thrive, the environment must provide plenty of mental stimulation. They benefit from early socialization and training, too, whether they live in an apartment or a house.

Even though Yorkies do not require much space, they can benefit from some moderate exercise as they are Terriers. Walking and playing outside will keep your Yorkie active as it'll be able to get some fresh air. If you live in a region where the temperatures are chilly, the pet will need something to keep them warm.

Yorkies are small and fun-loving dogs that enjoy being carried around when out and about or covering a bit more distance. They are an ideal choice for city or town dwellers. Inquisitive and playful, they can make great playmates, though, like other dogs of the Terrier group, they sometimes dig themselves out of your gardens. This tiny package of dog delight is a great candidate for households with older children (because Yorkies tend to bond with other pets better when they grow up with more than one animal at a time) and are not planning to add additional pets to the family any time soon.

It is important to keep the Yorkie coat clean, healthy, and free of tangles by grooming it regularly. With fur that resembles human hair, they must be brushed every day, and at least twice a week they need to be bathed (including conditioner). It is best to keep the hair on top of their heads trimmed or pulled up to protect their eyes. Professional grooming is something some Yorkies find useful for maintaining their dogs in top condition. Dental health requires regular tooth brushing and trimming of nails.

Yorkies have delicate limbs and are prone to knee issues like luxating patellas (slipped knee caps), so be sure that your puppy doesn't jump from high places when its bones are still growing.

They also have prone eyes. The retinas of some Yorkies may slowly degenerate, resulting in lost vision. Most breeders will disclose the medical history of their puppies' parents, as well as screen them for common health problems that this breed faces. The Yorkie breed is generally healthy, but good pet health insurance is recommended just in case.
